EarthBase V 1.0 - Vector GIS with Style
We are happy to announce the completion of EarthBase version 1.0, a global database of spatial
data, annotation and associated cartographic styles and symbols. An exciting line of EarthBase derived products
are scheduled for release in 2006.
EarthBase GIS data bundles are available now for all countries and regions of the world. Each of our 52 bundles contain
map themes for one
or more countries, an annotated project file for ArcView 3.x and instructions for MapInfo and ArMap 9.x users.
EarthBase main features include:
- 48 map themes at 1:1,000,000 scale. Click for list
- Over 7 million geographic features
- Industry standard file format (ESRI ShapeFile)
- 14 map annotation themes (water, physical features, etc.)
- Globally consistent colors, symbols and styles
- Provincial/State capitals
- Population centers ranked by population estimate
- 5 road classifications
- Land elevation and ocean depth shading
- Nature Reserves
- Ground surface elements
- Provincial/State boundaries areal and linear features
- Perennial, non-perennial rivers and lakes
Annotation data and fully annotated ArcView project files included in all EarthBase data packages.

500m/pixel True Color Satellite Imagery
These images are taken from the Blue Marble: Next Generation image produced by
NASA's Visible Earth project. Stunning true-color, cloud-free images of the entire earth at a resolution of 500 meters per pixel. The image is broken into the same 52 geographic regions as the Vector Base Map. This image is a great improvement over the previous 1km/pixel version.
Here is a quote from the Visible Earth Website:
"Blue Marble: Next Generation improves the techniques for turning satellite data into digital images, providing greater detail in areas that usually appear very dark to the satellite (because a large amount of sunlight is being absorbed), for example in dense tropical forests. The ability to create a digital image that provides great detail in darker regions without 'washing out' brighter regions, like glaciers, snow-covered areas, and deserts is one of the great challenges of visualizing satellite data. The new version also improves image clarity, and gives highly reflective bodies of water a more realistic appearance."
These images make a great overlay addition to the Vector Base Map.

Shaded Relief Maps
500m/pixel
All shaded relief images have now been regenerated using 90 meter Shuttle Radar Topography (SRTM) data resampled to 500m per pixel. The result is much finer detail in our DEM products and significantly increased detail in our Shaded Relief Images.
These beautiful Shaded Relief Images were created in-house using specialized software. The pixel resolution
of the Shaded Relief Image is 500 meters, and the dimensions match both the true color satellite image
and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
Overlay the Vector Base Map on this image to impart to your viewers a sense of topographic relief. The color scheme is
consistent across the entire globe and looks beautiful!
The Global Shaded Relief Image is bundled into the same 52 geographic regions as our other products. Images
are supplied in TIFF/GeoTIFF (.tif) format together with world files for easy georeferencing.

Global 1Km Land Cover Imagery
Land cover information is an important component in many remote sensing and
GIS applications. The land cover data available from this page was
produced by the Global Land Cover Facility at the University of Maryland. The data
was produced by classification of NASA/NOAA Pathfinder Land data with a spatial
resolution of 1km per pixel. The coordinate system of the imagery is geographic (Lat/Lon).
There are fourteen land cover types as illustrated in the image to the right.
The Global 1Km Land Cover image is split up into the same 52 geographic regions as our other products.
Each package contains two image files. A color image for overlay and presentation purposes is provided
in MS Windows Bitmap (.bmp) format together with world files for easy georeferencing. For analytical
applications, the raw Land Cover data is supplied in ArcView .bil (Band Interleaved by Line) format.

Digital Elevation Models (DEM)
500m/pixel
Our Digital Elevation Models (DEM) were created by resampling the 90 meter/pixel Shuttle Radar Topograpgy Mission (SRTM) data to 500 meter per pixel. The resolution matches the other our Shaded Relief and True-Color Satellite image raster data products. These elevation models are supplied in TIFF/GeoTIFF (.tif) format.
