Is offering a free package of digital geological data of Madagascar. The package contains a large subset, over 16,000 square kilometers, of our 1:1,000,000 and 1:500,000 scale vector geology maps. All layers in both map products are included in the sample package. In addtion to the geoligcal data, we have included 6 bands of a Landsat TM5 image that covers the subset area as well as a DEM at 90 meters to the pixel resolution. Selected layers (rivers, roads, towns, etc.) from our Vector Base Map product for Madagascar are also included.
We are making this data available for potential customers to evaluate our geology maps prior to purchase. However, we encourage all interested persons to download and use the data free of charge. This package is ideal for students of GIS and remote sensing. Practical experience can be gained in many areas related to the fields of remote sensing and GIS:
- Image classification
- False color composites and band ratios
- 3D Fly-by animation
- Image processing
- Gain experience in the real-world problems of combining data
from different sources at multiple scales and resolutions
All vector data are packaged as ESRI ShapeFiles. The Landsat TM5 image and the 90 meter DEM are in ArcView raster format (.bil). An ArcView 3.x and 8.x project files (.apr, .mxd) files are included. Total .zip file size is 81MB. Users of ESRI software simply unzip the archive files and double-click the appropriate project file. Users of other GIS software will need to import the ShapeFiles and BIL files manually. Consult your GIS software documentation for details. The 1:500,000 scale geology data has special table relationships that will need to be setup in non-ESRI software packages. Please see http://www.gospatial.com/html/madagascar_500K.php for details of the table structures. Consult the readme file for details on querying the various attributes in ArcView 3.x and ArcMap 8.x.
